Transfer of KnowHow NonProfit to NCVO

This innovative web-based information resource for the Third Sector has been developed with support from The Centre for Charity Effectiveness Trust, to which our Charitable Fund provides grants and whose Trustees include our own Members. Now that it has been established as a successful and valuable website, it is timely to place it in the mainstream of the Non-for-Profit Community.

Agreement has therefore been reached between The Centre for Charity Effectiveness Trust, City University London and the National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO) for KnowHow NonProfit to be transferred from City University, which incorporates The Centre of Charity Effectiveness, to NVCO later this year, planned to be October.

Whilst the development, launch and early running costs were largely met by The Big Lottery Fund, The Centre for Charity Effectiveness Trust played an important part in providing initial support, and Past Master Patrick Mc Hugh and Freeman Bernie Eccles gave a very great deal of their own time pro bono over four years to assisting the project.

This is a success story for our involvement with the Cass Centre for Charitable Effectiveness and our thanks and congratulations should go to the Trustees most involved with this innovation. As well as Patrick and Bernie, they are Past Master Barrie Collins, Liveryman John MacLean-Fox, and Liveryman Gareth Rees (current Chairman of the Trustees.) Liveryman Denise Fellows and Freeman Professor Paul Palmer contributed importantly through their positions in the Cass Business School and The Centre for Charity Effectiveness.

“Stirred, not shaken .... and certainly not dry!”

For the ninth year running, the Company entered a boat in the Sea Cadets Royalist Regatta on 17/18 May – the photo shows a particularly rainswept and windblown crew  passing a competitor. This  year’s entry was shared with the Worshipful Company of Shipwrights.

The joint entry was surely an appropriate and propitious connection because together, in boat number “007”,  we managed to carry off the trophy for the best performing boat with direct City Connections coming sixth overall out of the fleet of 13. The glass trophy will of course be shared with the Shipwrights for half of the year but will be on display at our Education Supper.

Four Company members – Past Masters Patrick McHugh (skipper) and Alan Broomhead (signals), with Second Warden Geoff Llewellyn (winch monkey) and Freeman Jeff Cant (foredeck figurehead ) – braved the Force Six winds of the Solent and came back with the Trophy!”

St Giles Trust, based in Camberwell, aims to break the cycle of offending to create safer communities. http://www.stgilestrust.org.uk/   We are delighted to report that St Giles Trust has been assessed as the 4th best organisation to work for in the public and charity sectors in the entire UK.  The results were reported in The Sunday Times on 13th March 2011 in a supplement entitled “The 100 best places to work in the public and charity sectors 2011”.

In recognition of his support to the Worshipful Company, Jon Moulton, doyen of the Private Equity sector, was given lunch by Members on 17 March.  Hosted by PM Professor Bob Garratt at The Reform Club, it was a very enjoyable and interesting occasion.

Jon was a pioneer of the Venture Capital industry in the UK. Starting in 1980, he came to the fore as Managing Director of the highly successful Schroders Ventures. He moved on to APAX Partners and then founded Alchemy where his involvement as a possible buyer of MG Rover put him firmly on television. He has now founded a new firm, Better Capital. He is outspoken on many subjects, such as what he regards as the unduly favourable tax treatment of private equity.

Jon has supported the Worshipful Company on a number of occasions, from delivering formal Lectures to donating a Lunch with him as a Prize for our Charity Auction.

As an expression of the Company’s appreciation, Jon was presented with a caricature of himself dressed in marathon running mode, which included reference to his hobbies, business and charitable achievements.  He was also presented with an Appreciation Message, signed by the thirteen Members of the Company present.

Many thanks must be given to Member Gordon Stoker, who has been able to gain Jon’s support over the years and who organised the lunch and the mementoes. All present were most grateful to PM Bob Garratt for hosting the lunch in fine style.

The Election Court on the 23rd September confirmed Vicky Pryce's election as Master. Given his current heavy work commitments, Geoff Llewellyn has chosen to remain as Second Warden, so Mary Collis leapfrogs him to become First Warden Elect.  Ed Sankey moves to Third Warden Elect - and Past Master Keith Burgess will robed as Fourth Warden during the formal ceremonies at the Installation Dinner on the 14th of October.

The Company Strategy for the next five years - to which many members contributed at workshops earlier this summer - was approved at the Election Court.  Detailed implementation plans and responsibilities are still being worked on - more news of that later this Autumn!

Three new members were admitted at the reception after the Annual service on 23rd Spetember:

Congratulations to Third Warden Mary Collis and the Learned Clerk who undertook the challenge of the Livery Hall walk in September  - and raised £1,211 (£56 more than last year) for our Charitable Fund.
