Pro-Bono Consulting

Giving and Gaining’ in a Pro Bono Consulting Assignment

Members of the Company are encouraged to be available for pro bono consultancy assignments and hence contribute their time and experience to help a worthy charity.  Pro bono consulting work is a great way of ‘Giving and Gaining’. Pro bono assignments add to personal development through the particular ‘third sector’ challenges encountered. Company Members have found that pro bono work within the not-for-profit sector yields new friends and rich new veins of consulting experience. London Sustainability Exchange

Company members supported the CEO and Board in re-assessing its strategy a few years after its successful launch, while at the same time helping them to introduce a new quality management system into the organisation.

Penny Shepherd, CEO, volunteered, “I am writing to say a big thank you to the Worshipful Company of Management Consultants for your support in developing the new strategy. The way in which you undertook the assignment meant that I was able to continue with it seamlessly, building on the support provided. We have also achieved Level 1 PQASSO and are now moving on to Levels 2 and then 3 with your help. It really is very useful to have an independent facilitator to help guide us through it.”

The Director of the Trust wrote:

I would like to thank you and the Company very much for all the help you have given us. It has been enormously helpful to us in clarifying our thinking and planning for the future. You have worked with me in developing many ideas and made several presentations to our Trustees and its Planning Group. All of this has involved a lot of your time and expertise, for which we are most grateful”.

British Heart Foundation

When the British Heart Foundation won the 2005 Charity Finance Judges Award for Charity Effectiveness, sponsored by the Worshipful Company of Management Consultants, CEO, Peter Hollins, chose a free consulting assignment from the Company as the prize.

The agreed goals of the project were a thorough-going review of BHF’s purchasing arrangements, challenging members of the organisation to demonstrate the value for money that they were obtaining, and making any appropriate recommendations regarding organisation, approach or accountability to ensure that BHF receives best value at all times.

Consultants, Liverymen Peter Scott and Paul Northcott found this to be a fascinating assignment, revealing much existing good practice as well as opportunities for further advancement of purchasing processes.
