Thoughts from the CEO who received
mentoring
“Sign up for Mentoring now! From my
Mentor I have received informed,
interested and incisive reaction to
issues both large and small. Its been
a great developmental experience for
me: not so much for the answers I
received, as for the discussions which
lead to those lightbulb moments – ah,
that’s what I could do, that’s how the
Charity could get where it wants to
go, that’s a better way of thinking
about that problem. Thanks to my
Mentor and the WCoMC Mentoring
Scheme”. Jonathan Potter,
Executive Director, People In Aid.

How the mentor sees it
"I really enjoy being a Mentor and
look forward to Mentoring sessions.
For me it's not just about giving
advice, it's about creating the space
for other people to think through
their problems and that means getting
some of their old thinking out of the
way too. They usually are the best
experts and I learn a lot from them."

Thoughts from the CEO who received
mentoring

Dr Karl Mackie, Chief Executive, CEDR
"My own organisation is founded on a
belief in the power of the dynamic of
introducing an 'independent third
party' into conflicts. The mentoring I
received was equally valuable at a
personal and management level,
bringing a breath of fresh air to my
thinking as a CEO, helping me tap into
new perspectives while also
reinforcing my confidence in key
areas. My Mentor from WCoMC fulfilled
the role of a skilled but detached
sounding board very well. I found my
Mentor to be a very able mediator as
well, when he joined us on one of our
programmes!".

How the mentor sees it
"I found Karl’s comment really
rewarding because I have thoroughly
enjoyed my time spent with him -
discussing the issues both he and his
organisation face - and identifying,
from an external perspective, real
areas where progress could be made and
issues solved."

Thoughts from the CEO who received
mentoring

Kevin Williams, CEO, TACT Adolescent
and Childrens' Trust.
"As a new CEO I found the Mentoring
process extremely useful. The role
required a steep learning curve and it
was great to have someone on the
outside to bounce ideas off. My Mentor
came with a breadth of knowledge and
experience but also with a
non-judgemental attitude and I could
talk about a range of issues from
Governance, to staffing and, yes,
finance! I could share frustrations
and challenges but also give myself
praise when things went right. I have
good relationships with my other
Senior Managers and Chair of Governors
but these relationships have
expectations that the mentoring
process did not. I still find it
invaluable and would highly recommend
it."

Thoughts from the CEO who received
mentoring

Kate Green, CEO, Child Poverty Action
Group
“I found the Mentoring I received
worked well for me because there was
so much flexibility in how I could use
it. I quickly realised my priority was
to work through one very tricky major
issue that was blocking my way. My
Mentor really helped me to do that and
to find a way through and once this
was completed we agreed to bring the
Mentoring to a conclusion. I know I
could always come back again to my
Mentor in the future if I felt there
was a new issue I needed help with.
The WCoMC Mentoring I received was
very helpful."

|
How the mentor sees it
"The Mentoring process seemed to go
well, though I am hesitant to
acknowledge the comments made on the
beneficial outcome. All I did was to
help my Mentor Partner focus on the
issues that were concerning her and to
ensure that positive conclusions were
reached. I found it to be a mutually
rewarding experience."

Thoughts from the CEO who received
mentoring

Martin Davies, Chief Executive, Age
Concern Westminster
“Mentoring has provided me with an
independent opinion that has put my
interests and well-being first. My
Mentor was a wise counsel, encouraging
me to reflect as much as I learned, as
well giving me encouragement and the
impetus to go and do. He helped me
identify barriers at work and address
them successfully. Knowing he was
always there to support me has been a
great benefit. The Mentoring I
received has been invaluable to me as
a Chief Executive.”

Mentor, Liveryman, Robin Mather
|
How the mentor sees it
“It has been a privilege to discuss
and be engaged with my Mentor Partner
on issues that are fundamental to his
successful leadership of the charity.
I strongly recommend other Company
members to consider seriously the
opportunity to Mentor others- it
richly repays the time you invest.”

“The WCoMC Mentor scheme has been

positive way. As a result, I have
grown, and the organisation has
benefited."

How the mentor sees it
“Helping my Partner deal with major
work-related issues without losing
sight of her overall vision for the

|
Thoughts from the CEO who received
mentoring

David Harvey, Chief Executive, Society
of Trust and Estate Practitioners
"Mentoring, for me, provided an
intellectually challenging and
supportive environment within which to
discuss my organisation's problems,
challenges and people with no
restrictions whatsoever. My Mentor was
a critical friend who helped me to
consider issues objectively, whether
that discussion confirmed my own
thinking, helped me to throw out some
existing ideas, or set me off on a new
track. No-one in your own organisation
has real detachment, so good Mentoring
brings this with high quality time to
talk and think”.

Mentor, Mike Jeans MBE, Past
Master and Founder Liveryman
|
How the mentor sees it
"Mentoring is not a one way process -
it's surprising how much you learn as
a result of listening to the issues
faced by your Mentor Partner (or
Mentee). The time you spend together
is, after all, a time for reflection
for both of you."
