I spent 30 year
with Accenture (Andersen Consulting as I still call it) and left
in 2000. Before anyone gets too excited about my personal wealth
I will point out that it was the wrong side of the IPO.
I would like to
think that in my time there I lead some major innovations and
helped to shape the business worldwide. When I joined
the London operation was 75 people. Worldwide it was 800 people.
When I left the UK was a couple of thousand and worldwide 70000
people.
I lead the UK
operation from 1988 to 1994. After that I took worldwide
responsibilities for the service lines and the skills of the
organisation from 1994 to 1997. From 1997 to 2000 I lead the
outsourcing business. In the latter two positions I reported
directly to the worldwide chief executive.
I served on the
Board of the Andersen Worldwide Organisation and was on a small
working party that attempted to find a way to accommodate a
consulting business and an accounting business under the same
umbrella. You could say that we were successful when an
arbitration brought about a formal separation.
In my post
Accenture life I have been the Executive Chairman of a publicly
quoted IT Training and Consulting company, an advisor to EDS,
European Chairman of BearingPoint and a non executive board
member of MORI.
My pro bono
activity has been to be for 5 years Vice Chairman of the
Public Services Productivity panel at HM treasury from 2000 to
2005. They gave me an OBE for that. I was also a member of the
Capability Review team of the Treasury in 2007.
I am a past
Chairman of the MCA and was Master of the Guild of Management
Consultants in 1998.
I have two
daughters in their 30’s and a wife who was struck down by a
stroke some 15 years ago. Part of my life is spent supporting
her. I also have a long term friend and partner Hilary who
supports me through life’s challenges.
Oh, by the way ,
I have a PhD in solid state physics (almost all forgotten now)
and a LLD from Bristol University. To amuse myself I have
been doing an Open University course in Spanish.
