The Royalist RegattaThe Royalist Regatta is held every year in aid of the Sea Cadets and the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. In 2008 the company decided to try and improve on its previous performances so the team of the Master, Past Master Allan Duguid, the Clerk, Assistants Edward Sankey, Doug Prior and Geoff Llewellyn with Liveryman Alan Russell joined skipper Past Master Patrick McHugh at his home in Anglesey for a weekend of training in late April on his yacht Marian Maid. The weather in North Wales was appalling but much fun was had hauling pretend spinnakers up the mast on the pontoons. When it came to the Royalist Regatta on 13th and 14th May in the Solent the weather was much kinder and the crew performed exceptionally well against stiff competition from the Royal Navy, the Royal Marines, the Earl of Wessex and a few professional skippers, coming in sixth out of a fleet of twelve. In the photograph you see the Company’s finely tuned foredeck crew (Ed Sankey and Alan Russell) about to hoist the spinnaker as the yacht comes to a windward mark leading two competitors.
