The Sea Cadets organisation relies on committed
volunteers across the country. The credit belongs to
these volunteers for the enthusiastic, well turned out
cadets who appear at major events - from huge Trafalgar
Day Parades to Remembrance Services all over the UK.
Behind the scenes more volunteers apply their management
skills to the running of Sea Cadet Units. Others work
hard to raise funds for upkeep.
With the drive to heighten profile and expand
operations, the Sea Cadets now seek more volunteers.

There’s a place for your particular skill ……
Every week thousands of adult volunteers turn out to
teach, mentor and lead Sea Cadets through some of the
most important years of their young lives. Some are
ex-Cadets, some parents of Cadets, others just want to
give youngsters the benefit of their experience, and all
are willing to help in any way they can.
Volunteers can also earn useful skills and
qualifications. Adult instructor courses are run in all
the same disciplines taught to Sea Cadets. Management
and training skills, as well as vocational
qualifications, right up to degree level, are also
available at minimal cost to adult volunteers and are
invaluable in any walk of life.
Owing to the wide range of subjects and activities
taught, the Sea Cadets need instructors and volunteers
with a variety of skills – everything from basic
administration and DIY to specialist engineering and IT
skills.
Most Units also need volunteers as general helpers who
will usually be members of a Parents’ and Supporters’
Association. Skills in demand can rang from boat and
building maintenance to running the Cadets’ snack bar or
driving the minibus.
In addition
to the adults who have direct contact with the Cadets,
every Sea Cadet Unit has a Unit Management Committee
(UMC). Each Unit is an individually constituted charity
and the committee members are its charity trustees,
responsible for housing the Unit, supporting its
activities and raising the money to do so. The UMC needs
volunteers too, especially professional people with
management expertise or experience of fundraising and
charities.
