The Future of Education - Time for Radical Steps?

No doubt you will have noticed the recent media coverage about the impact of COVID on the provision of education, from our schools through to higher education.  The concern for our nation is that our young people have been seriously disadvantaged by the impact of the UK's necessary response to the pandemic, causing their educational development to fall behind at a time when we should be helping them to move forward into Further Education, Higher Education, Apprenticeships and Employment.

We have a voice in this matter.  The Livery Companies representing the City of London have a long history of supporting schools, both financially and developmentally, and engaging in the later stages of education and skills development.  We recognise the challenges, and as a livery company that promotes change through wisdom, we want to turn our attention to solutions.

The Education Committee of WCoMC is hosting an online panel discussion to explore the future of education in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.  The purpose of the event is to gather views from experts and contributors who have an interest in the education of our young people.  We want to tackle the problems and propose what can be done.

Our panel comprises:

  • Carol Selwyn-Jones - a teaching professional with over 30 years’ experience in the secondary maintained sector including as a faculty head in a large comprehensive school, 20+ years as a GCSE level examiner, currently with Cambridge International, and a lifelong supporter of the voluntary youth sector (Girlguiding), both as a leader of 14-18 year old members and a leader trainer, requiring understanding of how both children and adults learn.
  • Dona Henriques - a recently retired teacher and Youth Worker with over 30 years' experience in education at primary and secondary levels including 15 years in senior leadership in primary schools in London. Dona has served as a school governor since 1994.  She has three graduate daughters and is openly curious and always learning about life and humanity.
  • Hannah Wilson - a leadership development consultant, coach and trainer. She co-founded #WomenEd during her Deputy Headship at a large London-based MAT and also co-founded #DiverseEd during her Executive Headship at a start-up school in Oxfordshire. Hannah speaks, trains and writes about Diversity, Equity & Inclusion; Coaching and Mentoring; Mental Health and Wellbeing; Resilience and Leadership.
  • Dr Simon Davey - a change management consultant, academic, former school governor and co-founder of an East London education intervention programme. He has worked with primary and secondary schools and with young people’s programmes across the UK, focusing on aspiration, belief and character and ensuring all young people have what they need, from skills and careers support to technology and healthy breakfasts.

We will open the evening with the panel members putting forward their views on the challenges facing us and the potential opportunities, and then move into a facilitated open forum involving all attendees.

The meeting will take place on-line using video conferencing, and is free to attend. Please join us for this important event. Members can click on this Participant Listing link to see who has booked.
