Centennials: The 12 Habits of Great, Enduring Organisations

In the United Kingdom, almost 60% of small businesses fail in their first three years of life. The situation is similar in the United States where around a third of new businesses fail within their first two years, and half fail within their first five years. In 2020, the average lifespan of a company on the Standard and Poor's 500 Index was just over 21 years, compared with 32 years in 1965.

Professor Alex Hill has conducted ground-breaking research into the ways in which a range of enterprises have bucked this trend and have outperformed their peers for over 100 years. Professor Hill’s research on organisations as diverse as NASA, the New Zealand All Blacks, British Cycling, Eton College, the Royal College of Art and the Royal Shakespeare Company found that although very different they share remarkably similar strategies when it comes to maintaining excellence and success.

In this CMCE showcase, Professor Hill will share the twelve habits of these enduring organisations detailed in his recent book, Centennials.

Alex Hill is the co-founder and director of the Centre for High Performance a collaboration between Kingston University London, Duke University, London Business School and the University of Oxford. The Centre is dedicated to creating and sustaining high performing organisations to develop a more robust economy, society and environment.
