A Thameside Walk in Rotherhithe

Registration is closed for this event
A summer stroll along the south bank of the Thames below Tower Bridge.  This event is open both to Company Members and Non-Members to book.

A Thameside Walk in Rotherhithe

With the absence of formal events in May, enjoy a short social walk with other members along historic streets and a section of the Thames Path in Rotherhithe, stopping off at two famous pubs, both of which serve food. The rewards will be fine views of the Thames riverside looking towards Tower Bridge and a relaxing evening. Bring a potential member to show them what nice people we are, your spouse and/or a friend.

Led by Second Warden John Pulford, we will start at Rotherhithe Overground Station.  We will walk along Railway Avenue, passing the Brunel Museum, turning left where we will pass the Mayflower pub on the right, the Sands Film Studios and then St Mary the Virgin Church, proceeding behind the riverside buildings until we can get access to the riverside walk, where views of Wapping on the opposite bank and then Tower Bridge reveal themselves as we reach the Angel pub. The views of the cityscape from there are even better. If we are blessed with a sunset, it will be a sight you'll never forget. There's a range of views from inside the pub, including galleried seating over the water if the tide is in, and from the first floor restaurant.

Adjoining the pub you'll find signs to the Cherry Gardens, statues of the Salter family (don't miss the cat on the wall) and the remains of Edward III's Manor House revealed when the LDDC cleared old warehouses.

Learn more before you arrive by searching on the above names, where you'll find references to Pepys, Dickens and the place where Turner conceived his famous painting The Fighting Temeraire.

We will meet at 6.15 for a 6.30pm start at Rotherhithe Overground Station, or you can follow on to the Angel at your leisure. If you need help phone John on 07771 905300, or Bob Harris on 07802 406658. There is no charge for joining the walk, but please register so that we know who to expect.  Those registered are listed here.
