NonProfit Sector: Viability & Sustainability

  
​Responding to the challenges of increased costs and reduced income

Generating income is an ever-present challenge for charities and in the present difficult economic times. Achieving financial sustainability remains a key issue.

This workshop, hosted for the ProBono Committee by Jim Foster, will consider the impact on charities and other not for profit organisations of reductions in income from the public sector and the increasing numbers of hurdles faced by them when looking for other sources of income. The issues and potential solutions debated here are important topics for all management consultants, charity leaders and treasurers, and those in advisory positions to the sector in livery companies.

We will hear from Alex Skailes, Director, Centre for Charity Effectiveness at Bayes Business School and Rachel Backshall, Director of Fundraising at Whizz-Kids. Alex will explore how charities manage as their income reduces while ensuring the organisation is resilient. Rachel will explore how charities could make a strategic move to fundraise from trusts, foundations and the corporate sector:

Alex Skailes is a Director and senior academic at Bayes Business School (formerly Cass), City, University of London where she leads the Centre for Charity Effectiveness (CCE). She also chairs the board of the Bayes Global Women’s Leadership Programme. Alex has combined a senior career in financial services with over a decade of working solely with the NonProfit sector – as an educator, adviser, board chair and trustee. In 2022, Alex was elected to the board of the international NonProfit Academic Centers Council. Alex is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales, the Royal Geographical Society and the Royal Society for Arts, Manufacturing and Commerce. She is a Freeman of the City of London and a Liveryman of WCoMC.

Rachel Backshall began her career in the retail sector and following attainment of an MBA went on to enjoy a successful career in the B2B sector as a Client Director with British Telecom.  In 2004, seeking a new challenge and possessing a wish to apply her skills in a manner that would be of direct benefit to society, she made the conscious decision to enter the charity sector and has worked in fundraising, marketing and business development on behalf of the Duke of Edinburgh's Award, Marie Curie, Parkinson's UK, St Elizabeth Hospice, Coram and now Whizz-Kidz.
