The WCoMC Wine Course: Introductory Tasting

“A Bottle of Wine contains more Philosophy
than all the Books in the World” – Louis Pasteur

Our goal isn't to make you an expert but to show you that you don't need to be one to enjoy wine. We all have difference senses of taste and smell. How do we each assess different wines? How to understand the language that wine experts use? What is a light wine?  Or a corked wine? What are balance and length?

We will taste nine different wines to answer these questions - and we hope many more. We have grouped the questions to focus around four areas, each with two or three example wines:

  • Ripeness, acidity and oak
A Chablis and a New World Chardonnay

  • Alcohol and how we "see" it
A German Reisling and an Amarone

  • Tannins
    A Beaujolais and a Barolo

  • Age and maturity
A young Spanish wine, an older Rioja and an even older Anjou

After the tasting you will also be able to enjoy a couple of glasses of wine from our Company Cellar and circulate with the other participants. We will not be making any speeches but giving you an opportunity to engage within the very special fellowship of our Livery Company.

This will be practical interactive evening, guided by members of our Wine Club, using real wines to answer real questions that we all ask when tasting and comparing wines. We will supply biscuits and water to help cleanse the palate between tasting different wines. We also recommend that participants bring their own suitable savoury snacks, for example gougères (a recipe has been included in our wine course briefing pack). We are unable to supply food for the tasting, so participants should plan to eat elsewhere after the close.

Members and registered Event Account Holders can click on this Participant Listing link to see who has booked.

Please note that payment for this event will be processed by Stripe (debit/credit card).
