PM Steve Cant

Steve was installed as Master at our first major "face to face" event on 20th October 2021 following the privations of the Covid-19 lockdowns. He has a consultancy and accounting career that spans over 30 years, working across all the main sectors as a practitioner and in leadership roles.

After graduating in Economics with Technology from City University London he joined London Transport as a graduate trainee, rising ultimately to Management Services Accountant.  During ten years with London transport he migrated into finance roles and qualified as a management accountant. However, he still maintains that the best job he ever had was driving tube trains on the Central line!

Encouraged to leave and to become a “real accountant”, Steve then worked in industry where he introduced personal computing and computerised accounting to a computer services company!

In 1990 he moved into management consultancy, initially with Price Waterhouse, who were looking for accountants with public sector experience. During 10 years with PW and PwC he moved from public sector work to the private sector leading major international transformation programmes for commercial organisations. Steve was a casualty of the PW/Coopers merger in 2000 and after that he worked as a Director with both Cornwell Management Consultants and Capita Consulting, mainly on local government assignments, before finally bowing to the inevitable and becoming an independent practitioner. He has worked overseas on several occasions and spent significant time in France, India and West Indies and shorter periods in the USA and Switzerland.

He joined the Worshipful Company of Management Consultants in 2012 after giving up full time employment and an unrewarding spell as a “Gamesmaker” at the London Olympics. At that time he had a particular interest in supporting the Company’s ProBono work for charities, and subsequently became Chair of the ProBono Committee. He has undertaken many ProBono assignments for non-profit organisations in the UK as well as in South Africa. The last few years have seen Steve return to his roots acting as interim Finance Director for two charities. He has been a Court Assistant for five years and is Trustee and Treasurer at Art History Link-Up, a former ProBono client.

Steve claims to be a competent carpenter and electrician and he enjoys travelling with his partner Cathy, rock music, good food and good company.

Steve is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants, a Certified Management Consultant a Member of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport, and has a degree in Economics with Technology.
